It was May,
during my first year
of high school.
On my way home,
I was waiting for the bus
with my friend.
Suddenly, it started to rain,
and we got soaked
without umbrellas.
A student one year above me
came over
and offered me his umbrella.
“I’m okay.”
I turned him down once.
A little while later,
he came running back to me.
“I’ll get under
my friend’s umbrella,
so please take this.”
And he handed me his umbrella.
Even though
I had turned him down,
I was somehow happy
that he came back.
My heart fluttered
a little…
※Since I began creating my works,
I have sometimes found myself
remembering things from the past
and expressing through my work
the memories that still remain in my heart.
Among them is a moment
from my high school days—
one of my own experiences
that I still remember vividly.
I wanted to preserve that particular scene
in a piece,
and that is how this work came about.
For the figures and the bus stop,
I created the materials myself.
As I worked,
I remembered the hairstyle I had at the time
and the atmosphere of the student
one year ahead of me,
and tried, in my own way,
to recreate the image of that day
that still remains in my memory.
And actually,
there is a little more to this story.
My friend and I shared
the umbrella that the older student had lent me,
and then we got on the bus.
My friend asked me,
“Where did you get this umbrella?”
When I told her,
“The older student lent it to me,”
she said, “I’ll return it,”
quickly took the umbrella from me,
and went to give it back to him.
“But I was the one who borrowed it…”
I thought.
But my friend acted so quickly
that I was left standing there,
completely puzzled.
And the older student,
who suddenly had the umbrella returned to him,
looked just as puzzled.
I still remember that scene very clearly.
