いつもと少し違うハロウィン

ハロウィンの夜。
外がなんだかとてもにぎやかで、
ペンギンハウスのお母さんが
そっと外をのぞいてみました。

するとそこには、
「お菓子をくれないと、いたずらするぞ！」
とやって来たおばけ。

ところが、
男の子はちっとも怖がりません。

それどころか、
ハロウィンの格好をした男の子に
今度はおばけの方がびっくり。

そのうえ、そばには
こわ〜い顔をしたかぼちゃたちまで。

「わあっ！」

おばけはすっかり怖くなって、
今にも逃げ出しそう。

「どうして、怖がらせるはずのおばけが
こんなに怖がっているの？」

そう思った黒猫も、
面白そうに駆けつけてきました。

どうやら今夜のハロウィンは、
いつもと少し違うみたい…

On Halloween night,
it was unusually lively outside.

Curious about all the noise,
Mama Penguin from the Penguin House
quietly peeked outside.

There stood a ghost,
saying,

“Trick or treat!”

But the boy
wasn’t scared at all.

Instead,
the boy in his Halloween costume
startled the ghost.

And as if that weren’t enough,
there were some very scary-looking
pumpkins nearby too.

“Ahhh!”

The ghost was now so frightened
that it looked ready to run away.

“Why is the ghost,
who is supposed to scare everyone,
so scared?”

The black cat wondered the very same thing
and came running over,
looking quite amused.

It seems that this Halloween night
is a little different from usual…

※今回は、
いつもとは少し違うハロウィンを
表現してみたいと思いました。

そこで、
怖がらせる側と怖がる側を
逆転させてみたらどうだろうと考え、
お化けの方が怖がっている様子が
ふと頭に浮かびました。

「こういうハロウィンも面白いかもしれない」
と思ったところから、
今回の作品を作り始めました。

かぼちゃや人物などは、
素材を自分で制作しました。

また今回は、
とても細かく切る作業が多く、
特に蜘蛛の巣は、
細かな部分までカッターナイフで
一つずつ切り抜いています。

作業をしながら、
「これって切り絵をしているみたいだな」と
思うほどでした。

でも、どうやら私は、
こうした細かいものを切る作業が
好きなようです。

カッターナイフで切ったり、
ハサミでちょきちょき切ったり、
そんな作業の音を聞きながら、
「なんて楽しいんだろう」と思い、
楽しみながら作った作品です。

※This time,
I wanted to create
a slightly different kind of Halloween.

I wondered what it would be like
to reverse the roles
of the one doing the scaring
and the one being scared,
and suddenly imagined
the ghost being the frightened one.

I thought,
“This kind of Halloween
might be fun too,”
and that was where
this piece began.

For the pumpkins and the figures,
I created the materials myself.

This piece also involved
a great deal of very detailed cutting.
For the spiderweb in particular,
I used a craft knife
to carefully cut out
each of the tiny sections.

As I worked,
I found myself thinking,
“This almost feels like
I’m making a paper-cut artwork.”

But it seems that I really enjoy
this kind of detailed cutting.

As I worked with my craft knife
and snipped away with my scissors,
listening to the sounds
of the cutting as I went,
I found myself thinking,
“How much fun this is.”

It was a piece
I truly enjoyed making.
