Welcome to K’s Little World… K

Akane Sasu… — Beneath the Purple Fields /

May 668, during Japan’s Asuka period.
Ōmi Province
(present-day Shiga Prefecture).

On the day of an imperial hunt
held by Emperor Tenji.

With many eyes upon them,
Prince Ōama waved his sleeve
toward Nukata no Ōkimi.

Seeing him, Nukata no Ōkimi thought—

“What if someone sees us…?”

Nukata no Ōkimi and Prince Ōama
had once deeply loved each other.

By this time, Nukata no Ōkimi
had already entered
Emperor Tenji’s inner court,
and the two were no longer free
to share their feelings
as they once had…

※Inspired by a poem by Nukata no Ōkimi
in the Man’yōshū,
I wove the world I felt within the poem
into my own imagery and words.

※Although I had not mentioned it
in My Story,
I have long been very interested
not only in the Heian period,
but also in the Asuka period,
particularly the era of Emperors Tenji and Tenmu
and Empress Jitō.

I believe it was when I was in high school
that I first encountered the poems
associated with Princess Nukata
and Prince Ōama in the Man’yōshū.
I still remember how deeply moved I was.

“As you walk through the purple fields,
through the marked fields,
will the field guards not see you
waving your sleeve?”

(Man’yōshū, Book 1, Poem 20 — Princess Nukata)
(English translation prepared for this work)

That poem has remained
in my heart ever since.

Some time after I began creating collages,
I started thinking that I would someday
like to bring this world into one of my works.

I usually create my works
by turning worlds from my own imagination
into stories.

So this was my first time
creating a piece based on
a poem that actually exists.

What I struggled with most
was how to express the world of this poem
through a story.

I wanted people overseas
to understand it as well,
but I felt that simply translating
the original Man’yōshū poem into English
might not fully convey the feelings within it.

So, while imagining the love
and emotions of Princess Nukata and Prince Ōama
that had stayed in my heart for so many years,
I decided to express them in my own words,
while trying not to stray too far
from the meaning of the original poem.

I tried to sense the depth
of their feelings in my own way,
but both bringing those feelings
to life through collage
and expressing the story in words
were truly difficult for me this time.

I hope you will enjoy this piece,
which I created with those thoughts in mind.

      📜💌🥰🫶
